Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the College of Charleston. Sociology and Anthropology are two dynamic and exciting disciplines that will engage you in an examination of human societies from the past to present. Our faculty members’ research and teaching interests reflect the diverse specialty areas of our respective programs. In this diversity of coverage, you are sure to find something of interest.

In both programs, you will have the opportunity to gain real-world experiences by completing an internship in the community that will challenge you to apply what you have learned in the classroom. Anthropology students have the opportunity to complete one of our outstanding archaeological field schools.  In addition, our majors regularly work one-on-one with faculty on Independent Study projects and Bachelor’s Essays. Faculty members will also invite students to assist with their research, which often result in faculty-student publications or presentations at academic conferences. Each of these opportunities helps prepare you for jobs or graduate school once you finish your degree at the College.

I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our Department and the opportunities we offer our students. If you are not yet a student at the College of Charleston and are planning to visit the campus, we would be happy to arrange for you to sit in on one of our classes or to meet with some of our Sociology and Anthropology faculty.

To answer your questions or to arrange a visit with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, please contact our Associate Chair, Deborah Auriffeille or myself.

We look forward to working with you.

Christine Finnan, Chair
