Honors and Awards

The Department hosts an annual honors reception each Spring to recognize student academic excellence in Sociology and Anthropology.  Celebrated honors and awards include:

  • Alpha Kappa Delta (Sociology Honor Society)

  • Lambda Alpha (Anthropology Honor Society)

  • Humanities and Social Sciences Scholars

  • Outstanding Students:  Selected by faculty for outstanding acheivement in their courses and for making a positive intellectual contribution to the classroom. 

  • Departmental Honors:  Acknowledges students with a GPA in the major of at least 3.5 who have completed at least 12 hours of exceptionally fine work in any combination of Independent Study, Internship, Tutorial or Bachelor's Essay.

  • Transfer Student Academic Achievement Award:  Each year, the College of Charleston recognizes one transfer student from each Department who demonstrates exemplary academic acheivement.

In addition to the annual Departmental Honors Reception, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) also recognizes HSS Scholars each year at an annual celebration.  The HSS Scholars Award honors graduating seniors who have distinguished themselve by amassing an impressive body of work during their undergraduate careers.  The two top students in each of the majors taught within HSS are recognized for their academic acheivements as HSS Scholars.
