How Do I Set up and Register for an Anthropology Internship?

Anthropology Internship Coordinator: Dr. Maureen Hays haysm@cofc.edu

To begin, look over the organizations and descriptions on the Internship Placement List, and give some thought to what type of internship you would prefer.

Next, consult with the anthropology internship coordinator about your interests, strengths and career objectives to identify the most appropriate internship. You should submit to the anthropology internship coordinator via email a copy of your current degree audit and resume prior to this consultation. You should also decide the number of hours per week you would like to intern. Internship credit is variable, ranging from one to six credits.  Generally, three hours of internship per week are required for one hour of academic credit; a typical three credit internship requires nine hours of internship placement per week or 120 hours per semester.

After you, in consultation with the anthropology internship coordinator, have selected appropriate internship options, you will write a cover letter to the organization contact introducing yourself and expressing why you are interested in an internship with that organization.

Once that letter is approved by the anthropology internship coordinator, you will send it, along with your resume, to the organization contact. Subsequent steps may include a phone or in-person interview with the organization’s intern supervisor.

If you and the organization agree to the internship, the anthropology internship coordinator will work with you to complete the relevant enrollment paperwork that both you and the on-site internship supervisor will sign.
